22일 한 해 중 가장 더운 삼복(三伏) 중 두 번째 날에 해당하는 중복(中伏)을 맞았다.

기상청에 따르면 이날 전국이 대체로 흐린 가운데 낮 최고 기온은 34도며 폭염특보가 곳곳에서 발효됐다.
특히 이날은 24절기 중 하지(夏至)에서 네 번째 경일(庚日)에 해당하는 중복이다. 초복은 하지에서 세 번째 경일이며 말복은 입추(立秋)에서 첫 번째 경일이다. 초복과 중복은 열흘 간격을 두고 온다.
경일은 천간(天干) 중 일곱 번째에 해당하는 날을 의미한다. 천간은 갑(甲), 을(乙), 병(丙), 정(丁), 무(戊), 기(己), 경(庚), 신(辛), 임(壬), 계(癸) 순으로 된 10개의 글자를 지칭한다.

복날에 먹는 대표적인 음식으로 삼계탕이 있다. 복날과 같이 기온이 높은 날에는 몸 밖과 안의 온도 차가 커지면 위장이 약해져 기력이 떨어지기 쉽다.
삼계탕의 주재료인 닭과 인삼은 차가워진 위장을 따뜻하게 데워 지친 기력을 보강해줄 수 있다.
한편 2019년 초복은 양력으로 7월 12일, 중복은 7월 22일, 말복은 8월 11일이다.
